WHO WE ARE


Dean Smith - Director

For over 25 years Dean Smith Hampshire Marine’s founder has developed a high level of trust amongst clients and industry professionals within the superyacht market.


Following a number of years in the sailboat industry working where Dean ran a yacht builder in Falmouth, UK working with the likes of Dubois Yacht Design and Rhoades Young on the design, he then joined the famous Devonport Royal Dockyard as Business Development Manager for their superyacht division and during his time was involved with the 82metre M/Y Sarafsa by Winch Design and the 96metre VAVA II working with RWD and Remi Tessier on the design.


In 2009 Dean joined leading marine consultants Burness Corlett Three Quays and sister company Royale Oceanic, superyacht specialists becoming Group Managing Director in 2013.


Since founding Hampshire Marine he focuses his time on overseeing the company’s refit projects throughout Europe, most recently spending time in our Hamburg project office for our latest large yacht refit with Lurssen.


With new construction projects underway in Holland he also has day to day involvement in the project meetings with the shipyard and clients, assisting our project managers where possible.

Malcolm Lindsay - Technical Director

Malcolm has been working with Hampshire Marine since inception and has been a key part of our refit management projects, shipyard negotiation team and all survey work.


His broad experience is gained from many years within the industry as a consultant to yacht owners working on major new construction projects and prior as a Chief Engineer on a number of large superyachts.


Currently Malcolm compiles and reviews new construction, refit, conversion, repair and warranty specifications including commenting and advising on justification of ‘Variations to Contract’ with regards to the owner’s enjoyment and benefit, yacht’s operation and value for money.


Malcolm attends shipyards and yachts on board as required by the client to follow and advise/comment on construction, refit, acceptance trials, protocols of delivery and other works ensuring the clients’ expectations and demands of quality and cost control are complied with. This involves regular reporting to the client or his/her designated representative.


He has worked at many leading superyacht shipyards including, Lurssen, Nobiskrug, Amels and Abeking & Rasmussen.

Claire McKee - Project Coordinator /  Naval Architect

Claire qualified as a Naval Architect in 2007 when she graduated from Newcastle University with a first-class Master’s degree in Naval Architecture. Claire won several awards during her time at University including the Macgregor-Navire Prize for engineering excellence.


From there Claire joined Lloyd Register as a plan approval specialist where she began her in depth knowledge and understanding of rules and regulations, this continued over the years including being a member of the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code working group.


Claire has a passion for sustainability and renewable energy and left LR to become a director of Sustainable Marine Technology (now Sustainable Marine Energy) looking at novel ways to reduce carbon emissions.


From there Claire joined leading marine consultants Burness Corlett Three Quays and sister company Royale Oceanic in 2012. Claire worked there as a Senior Consultant. She was responsible for a wide variety of consultancy project including the design development and project management of a number of large yacht projects between 100 and 140 metres.


Claire utilises her past experience in large yacht projects to provide comprehensive assistance across all aspects of our projects, extending her support wherever it is required. This encompasses various areas such as monitoring job lists, tracking project budgets and expenditure and providing invaluable assistance in all matters relating to Naval Architecture as they arise.

Barend Novak - Project Manager / Principal Consultant

Barend is a Class 1 Unlimited Chief Engineer with over 20 years of experience on a wide variety of vessels; ranging from high profile charter yachts to various commercial vessels and large cruise ships.

 

With extensive project management experience gained on new build deliveries, major refits and extensions, Barend is as qualified as he is experienced to support and assist all our clients especially in Northern European yacht building yards.  

 

In addition, Barend will manage dry-dock periods and support Class, Port-State, Flag-State surveys on behalf of our clients as required.

 

Based in The Netherlands, Barend is taking care of our projects in that region alongside  the extensive German yacht building market. Barend is a Dutch native and therefore fluent in Dutch, English, and German.

 

Barend is currently engaged on one of our new build projects: Project 406 at Royal Huisman Shipyard in The Netherlands.

Mike Martyn-Johns - Project Manager / Principal Consultant

Mike started his career as a sea going engineer, progressing to Chief Engineer before working for a number of shipping companies in London as a Technical Superintendent/New Build Project Manager and then as a Consultant/Surveyor providing expert opinion both in arbitration and court.

 

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and a Member of the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors.

 

Mike’s induction to the yachting industry was in 2001 with a fire investigation on a 62m motor yacht. Since he has acted for a number of Owners as Technical Advisor and/or Project Manager for the operation and maintenance, including refits and Special Surveys, as well as been instructed by lawyers, financial institutions and insurers to carry out pre-purchase/condition surveys, investigate refit/new building disputes and insurance claims. His work has encompassed both motor and sailing yachts up to 160m.

 

Mike joined Hampshire Marine from Royale Oceanic/Burness Corlett Three Quays where he spent 20 years, his roles included Principal Consultant, Project Manager and General/Technical Manger Yacht Management.


Mike oversees shipyard activities to help with the smooth operation of projects. His responsibilities include compiling and evaluating specifications for construction, refit, conversion, repair, and warranty projects. He provides valuable guidance on contract variations and monitors the progress of construction, refit, trials, and delivery. With a focus on quality, cost control, and meeting client expectations, Mike supports crew and the shipyard to assist projects in running smoothly. Additionally, he effectively manages dry-dock periods and provides crucial support during surveys for compliance with Class, and Flag-State regulations.

Helen Hilditch - Project Coordinator

In the yachting industry for over 25 years, Helen began her career within the yacht chandlery sector, moving on to work with independent yacht tech companies.


Helen then joined the world-renowned super yacht company Burgess in 2002, initially as listings secretary within the brokerage department, before moving to the developing new construction department, as technical assistant, and project co-ordinator, working on many of the largest projects in build over the following eight years.


From 2010 to 2016, Helen assumed the role of project co-ordinator within owner’s representative teams on a number of globally recognised 100m+ new construction projects in Northern Europe. Liaising directly with the owners, shipyards, designers, suppliers, and crew, whilst managing the huge task of owner’s supply items.


Returning to the UK, Helen joined MarineGuard, a leading superyacht security systems designer and supplier. Responsible for interfacing directly with the shipyards and owner’s representatives for all aspects of project requirements.


Joining Hampshire Marine in 2022 Helen helps across all our shipyard projects liaising with owner’s teams and crew adding significant knowledge of suppliers, process and planning.

Mark Cockcroft - Project Manager

A Class 1 Unlimited Chief Engineer, and member of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, Mark has been in the marine industry for more than 38 years; gaining experience on a broad range of vessels from commercial and cruise ships to superyachts. 

 

Following an engineering cadetship with Ocean Fleets, Mark progressed through the ranks, with UK and International commercial and cruise companies, achieving Chief Engineer status in 1999. 

 

Joining the yachting industry in 2000, Mark has acted as operational chief engineer, build engineer, technical manager and freelance consultant on several well-known 100m+ yachts, new construction projects and refits in Northern European shipyards. 

 

Mark joins Hampshire Marine as a project manager overseeing refit and new build projects and is based at our Hamburg office in Germany.

Eduardo Castellanos Velázquez - Partner, Barcelona

With a Master's in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Cartagena, and a Master’s in Project Management from La Salle University, Barcelona, Eduardo began his career as a fabrication project manager for the S-80 Submarine construction program at Navantia Cartagena Shipyard.   

 

Following a move to Barcelona, Eduardo joined MB92 as a project manager coordinating and supervising the complete schedules for vessels undertaking refit works within the shipyard. During this period, Eduardo also supervised the complete refurbishment of the dry dock door. 

 

Promoted to senior project manager with overall responsibility for the execution of several refit projects and liaising with the owner’s teams. Eduardo co-ordinated a team of project managers, company departments and suppliers, ensuring timely completion and acceptance of works, and departing of yachts as scheduled. 

 

Eduardo joins Hampshire Marine as a partner, leading our Barcelona office, based in Marina Port Vell, he will oversee refit projects and liaise with those yachts and clients wishing to undertake works in the local area.
